It was a super moon as it was close to Earth and appeared big. I missed the moon rise on the 20th evening.
It is called wolf moon from the Native American folklore for the January full moon.
There was an eclipse of the full moon. And as the Earth was between the sun and the moon, it prevented direct sunlight from reaching the moon, so the moon appeared red.
The moon began to pass into the Earth's shadow about 2.35 am and was in the main shadow an hour later.
I set my alarm for 4.30 am and as the moon wasn't visible from my windows, I had to get dressed and go out. The temperature was below zero and there was a heavy frost. By the time I found the moon it was barely visible as it was in the full eclipse, from 4.40 am. It appeared most red at 5.12 am, due to mass coverage.
As the moon was so dark and I knew it would remain dark for some time, I went back to bed!
The moon only passed out of the main shadow at 6.51 am and out of the outer shadow at 7.49 am.
I didn't get any decent photos as I didn't have a tripod and it was too cold to hang about for too long!
These photos were taken just after 4.40 when the moon was in full shadow. The first shows the moon above some houses.
I got better pictures in 2015 when there was a super blood moon.
