Permai Rainforest Resort, Sarawak

From the Sheraton Kuching, we moved to the Permai Rainforest Resort.
This is on the Santubong peninsula, near the Damai Resort. It opened in 1991 and I stayed there in 1994, before the tree houses were built. This time we stayed in a tree house. There are 10. The first was constructed using steel props and legs and is painted blue, the rest are all on a wooden framework and have decorative 'bark' covered walls. They are quite sturdy and quite luxurious, with aircon, fully tiled bathroom with scalding hot water, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, and a balcony looking down onto the sea.

Day visitors are welcome

There are 2 small beaches, one is sandy, the other very rocky.

not much water
There is also a small pool which although is manmade is fed by cold river water. The sea was warmer than the pool.
The water is cold but I did go in

Lots of prawns
The open air cafe is visited by squirrels - some largish brown ones and the Black Giant Squirrel, which is one of the world's largest arboreal rodents weighing up to 1.5 kg or more.
There were also some monkeys although I didn't see those close up.
Large skinks

No nudity!

For other activities there is an obstacle course, bridge building, a high ropes course with canopy walk, and a flying fox, as well as canoeing.

On the way back Kuching we went around the roundabout with the longest name, Bulatan Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah Bin Datuk Bandar Abang Haji Mohammad Kassim. I think this may be a world record.

  1. I thought the black giant squirrel is all black. This one is tri-colored and should be a provost squirrel.

  2. The black giant squirrel , Ratufa bicolor, has black upper parts and tail, with paler cheeks, throat etc. My squirrel didn't really have the red colour of a Prevost's and also seemed bigger.
    Now I am confused!

  3. Maybe geographical distribution of species. I am not sure either.
