CAMBODIA - PHNOM PENH 2008

Nationa, Museum

In June 2008 I met 2 Germans in Phonm Penh, for a caving expedition in Battambang province. I had been to Cambodia in 2004 but as a tourist visiting all the usual tourist sites. This trip would be different. Went back to the same hotel I used in 2004 and found the prices were 50% higher. The interesting thing though is that Cambodians still use the US$ which is interchangeable with the Riel, and the exchange rate is still the same it was 4 years ago ($1 = 4000 r). Whereas in Laos this year we found that the $ was no longer popular and the exchange rate had changed.

The first day we went to the Minsitry of Culture and Fine Arts to do some handshaking and also to get a formal letter of introduction which would hopefully smooth our progress over the next days. The Ministry -

Phnom Penh has changed a bit in 4 years. There are now 2 or 3 small shopping centres, and even more handphone shops than before. There seemed to be less beggars and less amputees from mines, although the street kids selling books are still very prominent along the river front. But much of the riverfront is undergoing flood relief works, sponsored by Japan.
