Canada - Quebec city

Whilst staying in Montreal, we did a day trip to Quebec old city. This was the highlight of the Canadian cities I had seen. On the way we got our first good views of the autumn colours - it was early October and the colours were apparently late this year due to the hot dry summer.

After we crossed the border into Quebec, there was a definite lack of Canadian flags and surprisngly very few Quebec ones

When we got to Quebec, we picked up our city guide. The Historic District of Old Québec is a World Heritage Site. "It is the only North American city to have preserved its ramparts, together with the numerous bastions, gates and defensive works which still surround Old Québec. The Upper Town, built on the cliff, has remained the religious and administrative centre, with its churches, convents and other monuments like the Dauphine Redoubt, the Citadel and Château Frontenac. Together with the Lower Town and its ancient districts, it forms an urban ensemble which is one of the best examples of a fortified colonial city."

The weather had finally improved and there was sunshine and blue sky, a contrast to the rain of the last few days. Tourney fountain in front of Parliament

We went to the Citadel area and Plains of Abraham and had a great view over the St Lawrence River which flows to Kingston to the southwest and to the Gulf of St Lawrence and Atlantic Ocean in the other direction.

As we went down to the port area, we saw 3 cruise ships moored. One was the Caribbean Princess

and this was dwarfed by the enormous Cunard Queen Mary 2

We then walked around the old town

This mural is particularly impressive

We had lunch at Paillard which is a famous sandwich shop -
Then we took the funicular up the hill, although it is actually electrically driven now -

From the upper town there are great views over the river and the port -
